Kev Coghlan is on the reddest of red Ducatis in Superstock 1000

Kev Coghlan, the young Scot who has done more than his fair share of racing for European teams, is riding half the European Superstock 1000 season on a Ducati 1199 Panigale for the Russian-backed DMC (Ducati Manchester, see?) team. “My team mate Alexei Ivanov was racing an FTR Moto2 bike in the Spanish championship at the same time as me,” explained Coghlan, “so my team helped him out a bit through the season. His (Russian) sponsor part owns Ducati Manchester and they decided to enter the Superstock 1000 championship and asked me if I wanted to ride as well, partly to help out Alexei a little bit. I had already signed up to race in British supersport, but they were happy enough with that.” Coghlan has some good people on his side of the garage, notably the man called ‘Desmo Dave’ Allenby who is his crew chief. “We had a trackday in Spain, at Aragon, with the bike in totally road trim then another trackday at Imola a couple of weeks before the first race, so we’ve been a bit short of set-up time, but I like the bike. It’s very different from the Moto2 bike and the supersport too, I need to ‘learn’ how to ride it to get the best out of it, but there’s a lot of potential in it,” explained the 23 year old, seventh in Imola and trying to find some more rear grip after his first session at Assen. If anyone can find it, Desmo can...

  • Oulton Park - Race Weekend Recap

Qualifying started well with steady lappery on race tyres. A return to the pits for soft compound tyres was made in preparation for some banzai laps, but on returning to the circuit Kev had not completed a flying lap when session was red flagged. On restart, things went pear-shaped when an electronic fault with the quick shifter meant the engine would not run properly, consigning rider and steed to the pits for the rest of the session. “I was hacked off as we were heading for a top ten grid slot before the red flag” Kev ended up 14th for the Race 1 grid.’
Race 1 started with some tough moves in the mid pack over the 1st lap, meaning Kev dropped a couple of places. The vibration which had been a constant through practice was making its presence felt, but as rear tyre wear progressed through the race, the vibration lessened, the bike felt better and lap times dropped. As the race had been shortened to a 10 lap sprint this improvement was short-lived. “I caught up with a group of 3 bikes but had no time to pass before the end”. The Perth rider ended up 14th, and based on lap times qualified 11th for Race 2.
Race 2 started well enough with a move up from 11th to 10th on lap1. “I got my head down and concentrated on getting some decent lap times in.” A gap had formed to the riders in front which proved too wide to bridge, leaving Kev at the head of a smaller secondary group. Several laps in, and a fast-moving Irwin passed through the group leaving the Team Appleyard rider in 11th. A full race distance might have allowed Kev to retake the place, but the race was red flagged at the end of Lap 10 after teammate Deane Brown had a serious crash at Old Hall corner. Luckily Brown was later given the all clear. Kev’s final placing was 11th. "I´m not happy with how the weekend went but at least we know we have some problems and the team are working hard to resolve them in time for the next race at Snetterton. We need to move up the leader board now, we can waste any more time." After the 3 rounds of the BSB Supersport Championship, Coghlan sits equal 12th in the standings.
